Abstract

Human resource management (HRM) has become a strategic factor in improving organizational
performance, particularly in higher education institutions, where academic staff play a central role in achieving
educational and research objectives. This literature review examines the role of human resource management
as a key driver of work efficiency among academic staff in higher education institutions. The study synthesizes
findings from previous scholarly research to identify the HRM practices that most significantly influence
work efficiency, including recruitment and selection, professional development and training, performance
management, leadership support, compensation and rewards, career development, workload management,
work-life balance, and institutional support.
The review also discusses the theoretical foundations underpinning the relationship between HRM and
work efficiency, including Human Capital Theory, the Ability–Motivation–Opportunity (AMO) Theory, Social
Exchange Theory, and Strategic Human Resource Management Theory. The findings indicate that integrated
and strategically implemented HRM practices contribute to enhanced employee competence, motivation,
engagement, and productivity, ultimately improving teaching quality, research performance, and overall
institutional effectiveness. The paper concludes that higher education institutions should adopt comprehensive
and strategically aligned HRM practices to strengthen academic staff performance and support sustainable
organizational development.
